Steel Guitar Jazz: News & Notes

Jazz Room at ISGC, Aug 30, 2008! - July 16, 2008

This year the Jazz Room at the International Steel Guitar Convention, at the Millenium Hotel, in St. Louis, will be held in the Jefferson Rooms again Saturday August 30th from 10 am to about 1:45 pm. So far the confirmed players are Dave Easley (what a big hit he was last year), Brian Ercek, Russ Wever and Maurice "Reece" Anderson, and SteelGuitarJazz.com webmaster Jim Cohen.

Once again there will be a killer rhythm section consisting of Kyle Honeycutt drums, Bob DeBoo acoustic bass, and Jim Stahlhut on guitar. The 'Jazz Room' is becoming a very popular feature of the ISGC and the room is likely to be packed again this year. So come on over and hear some great jazz on your favorite instrument.

While websurfing recently, I found this very interesting history of Bebop, written by someone who should know! I can't vouch for its veracity, but, hey, who cares? LOL!

Dave Easley Rebooked for 2008 Jazz Room - September 8, 2007

Jim Stahlhut has just announced that Dave Easley has been booked already for next year's ISGC Jazz Room. I'm sure anyone who heard him this year agrees that this is very good news indeed!

ISGC Jazz Room a Great Success! - September 1, 2007

I hope you had the chance to attend the 2nd Annual 'Jazz Room' at Scotty's International Steel Guitar Convention in St Louis over Labor Day. Or at least to listen to it, as it was broadcast in its entirety over Steelradio.com.

Jim Stahlhut did a splendid job of putting together a top-notch house band, including Bob DeBoo on upright bass, Kyle Hunnicutt on drums and Jim on guitar. Listeners were treated to sets by Maurice Anderson, Paul Franklin, Buzz Evans, Jim Cohen, Dave Easley, and Doug Jernigan. Dave Easley from New Orleans really set everyone on their ear with his very fresh approach to steel playing, passing through the Byrds classic, 'Eight Miles High' before finishing off with a killer rendition of Coltrane's 'Giant Steps'. Dave was surely the talk of the town that weekend and will hopefully be back for more next year.
